Bring in the SWAT team. It’s time to look at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) in instructional design and eLearning. There’s nothing new in SWOT; it’s tried and true (if boring), but when properly applied, it can take your current eLearning and kick it up a notch, improving productivity, efficiency and effectiveness in the workplace.

Strengths and Weaknesses

By analyzing formative and summative assessments, you’ll gain an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses in each eLearning module, and you can make adjustments to meet your goals from these assessments. CUSTOM E-LEARNING allows learners to advance at their own pace; however, those who require the structure of the classroom may need additional encouragement, and social learning can fill that need by providing peer support and additional routes to knowledge.

Social learning and PLNs pave pathways to human and career development for those who desire to broaden their horizons, and, social learning can help to burst silos sky high.


Two of the major threats inherent in eLearning are the lack of motivation and lack of engagement. Changing behaviors by replacing old behaviors with new behaviors is difficult in any situation, but no one online course is going to change a behavior. Behavior modification is an ongoing process and typically requires follow up and interaction with others to test and become comfortable with the new behavior. However, an eLearning strategy that incorporates social learning and PLNs can neutralize the threat posed by lack of motivation and engagement.
